Lellyphants. Seriously.

Been sketching for Neon Fishbowl - my current comic priority - today. Rachel wants me to do realism but I hates it so much. Yes I know I need to learn it anyway but UGH GOD DULL. Anyway I certainly need to work on drawing:
  • the female form
  • legs
  • variation of poses
  • HANDS
On the positive side I have been studying those wonderful black people I've heard so much about (hi honey) and I seem to have nailed how to draw a believable facial structure for an African-American. Next up Jews. Just kidding. I would never draw those. Here's a sketch of Damien and Shaniqua...

This is a bad representation of their relationship actually, now that I look at it. I think Damien is thinking "Boy its cold being homosexual."

I may not have done anything yesterday...

...but at least I made this cool userpic out of Zebediah Killgrave (aka Purple Man) from Alias. A great comic which everyone should read. More posting later today when I draw shiz. Seacrest OUT.

When you block you must scream and kill the person below you.

Missed a day already, go team!

So yes I have switched over to Live Journal instead of Blogger. Blogger is nice and all but the lack of certain features - mainly the ability to CUT - made me flip. I would have been here in the first place but some person already has digitalfizz. Worse, they haven't posted since 2005! Yes you should bloody well care, internet at large. Anyway, yesterday I slacked off completely but today I am back on the horse. I did some absolutely horrible sketches of Neon Fishbowl characters in class. Really, they were so horrible I actually gave up arting to pay attention to the lecture.

SIDE NOTE: Black people are difficult to get looking right.

Tonight I was going to do some more Loomis-based learning, but instead Rachel charged me with inventing some characters for her to write a story about. My contribution was "lazy security guards" because I am awesome and succinct. The result is some sort of tale about a lovestruck guard and his buddy-bud chick as they look after some important weapon. Here is the sketch I did for the story, will have to make it look like not-suck later on with chaos magicks.

The tale happens within the Vagrant universe, which I may have to give an actual name to if I end up with all these spin-off pieces not related to the comic. Perhaps "Gary Universe: Attorney at Law". That said, after designing these two I kind of want to use them in the comic somehow. Really need to work on the niggling details of unimportant-yet-fun things in this world. Also need to figure out how to draw backgrounds, because I just suck so profoundly.

Art style wise, the chick is closer to what I'd be going for in the comic eventually. Bink (the dude, dudes) is sort of a Vagrant/Fishbowl amalgam begging to be put out of his misery.

Opening Shot!

In a stroke of inspiration (involving tarot cards and caramel-filled chocolate squares) I have come to the realisation that the only thing I truly want to strive for at this point in my life is a career in the professional comics world. SCOFF if you will but people less talented than me have managed crazier things! I've always been an artist at heart, and holy jeebuz do I love comics, so it seems ridiculous that I haven't considered this as a serious option in the past.

To achieve this goal I've set out a few tasks for myself, including creating this blog as a place to keep track of my progress. The general gist of the deal of the thing is as follows:

  1. Start a daily art journal. (WOOT, I'm on a roll!)
  2. Take life drawing classes.
  3. Devour any other art classes I can get my sickening claws into.
  4. Put together a portfolio of work.
  5. Begin sending art to various places including magazines etc.
  6. DRAW FROM LIFE every day f'seriously.
  7. Do at least three hours of art each day.
This is officially DAY TWO of the new regime. No doubt if I stick to this each day for the next 12 months I can have some kickass skills and ubertastic work in my collection. I'll also have to do my best to look for networking opportunities and the like, since it always comes down to "who you know". I'll be posting sketches and whatnot here each day from now on, plus any notes on the grand project. Below are just some crazy old man heads I've been doing as I flip through my Andrew Loomis book (Fun With A Pencil). They have a wonderful retro charm and they're really quite fun to draw.
